Buffalo Sculpture

“I wanted to create an image of something that was once there, but is now gone.”

Reed Spencer (BEd '83), sculptor of the Buffalo

  • The Devonian Hallway where this stop is located has two points of interest. The first one is located to the left as you are walking towards the LINC building and highlights the Buffalo statue.
  • In 1982, University of Lethbridge alumnus Reed Spencer, who was a student at the time, crafted “The Buffalo” in an art class.
  • Students were asked to create something that related to the history of the area that would stand up in the environment.
  • Spencer and a friend placed the statue on a coulee to the south of University Hall during the night, fully expecting that they would be asked the next day to come and take it down.
  • However, faculty and staff of the University raised $450 to buy the sculpture from Reed and “The Buffalo” has been a permanent fixture ever since.
  • Reed Spencer was inducted into the Alumni Honour Society in 2016.
