The first full week of school is over. It’s time to breathe a huge sigh of relief… This first week was quite a roller coaster, and I’m SO ready to for it to slow down!
My experience may not be completely typical, but I suspect many of you can relate. Last weekend we had Fresh Fest, which was a fun way to start the year, but unfortunately it bit a chunk out of my time that left me working late Sunday night to get ready for the week ahead.
This year I was involved in Club Rush Week, sitting at the table for my club to try to recruit prospective members. Not only did this mean designing and constructing the signs, handouts, and signup sheets late Sunday night, but it also meant getting up early Monday morning (and every subsequent morning) to snag a good table and set up our display! Luckily we had a few great volunteers to help sit the table as well.
Rush Week is a lot of fun. I always enjoy talking about my club with students, and we often have interesting conversations from people who support or oppose our message (as a club with a political bend, we never fail to generate discussion, which is always a great part of university life!).
If you’re a First Year student, I hope you checked out Rush Week this year. Clubs can be a fulfilling part of your time at the U of L, and there are usually plenty of chances for meeting new friends, learning new things, and even taking on leadership roles! Most people sitting at the tables are excited about their club and eager to answer any questions you have, so there’s no reason to hesitate! If you missed out on Rush Week this year, you can find a list of all the ratified clubs on the Student’ Union website here: http://ulsu.ca/index.php?p=3612. Also, remember to check back at that site later on in the semester, because there are several clubs whose ratification is still pending, and you don’t want to miss them!
So that was the bulk of my crazy week. Well, that and a rather inconvenient class schedule in which I have three back-to-back 70-minute classes, one top-of-the-hill class sandwiched between two bottom-of-the-hill classes! There shall be no shortage of exercise this semester, speed-walking up and down the hill!
