Use \u201c \u201d for emphasis \u2013 use SPARINGLY<\/p>\n<p>2. When quoting a statement, place any commas and\/or periods inside the quotation marks.<br \/>\n<em>Example: \u201cThe U of L received funding for the program,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>4. Use commas before lists that start with e.g. or i.e.<br \/>\n<em>Example: She wanted to take courses in management, i.e. marketing, accounting and finance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>5. Do not use a comma before etc. at the end of a sentence.<br \/>\n<em>Example: She described the courses as fun, interesting, informative etc. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>6. Hyphens\/Dashes<br \/>\na. Dashes can be used to separate lists from a sentence.<br \/>\n<em>Example: You will learn valuable skills attending the University of Lethbridge \u2013<br \/>\neffective study habits, communication skills, presentation planning and<br \/>\ntest-writing abilities \u2013 all of which will be useful to you when you graduate. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>b. Dashes can be used instead of commas or semi-colons.<br \/>\n<em>Example: While all three divisions of the Faculty \u2013 humanities, science and social<br \/>\nscience \u2013 are represented on the eighth floor of University Hall\u2026 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>c. Use dashes to break long sentences into shorter ones<br \/>\n<em>Example: She did much of her research while studying at the U of L \u2013 though<br \/>\nit took her many years \u2013 she felt rewarded when she finally completed her master&#8217;s degree. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>d. Use dashes to separate lists from a sentence<br \/>\n<em>Example: He needed five courses \u2013 geography, biology, chemistry, history and archaeology \u2013 to graduate on time. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>e.
