{"id":6,"date":"2016-07-27T13:36:29","date_gmt":"2016-07-27T20:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.ulethbridge.ca\/science-toolkit\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2016-07-27T13:36:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-27T20:36:29","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.ulethbridge.ca\/science-toolkit","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Welcome to the <b>Science Toolkit home page<\/b> at the University of Lethbridge.\u00a0 The resources you can access from this page include <b>notes<\/b>, <b>examples<\/b> and <b>exercises<\/b> designed to help students develop and test hypotheses, and to write up their results in the form of a research paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><u><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Rationale:<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Mark Twain once noted that: &#8220;Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.&#8221;\u00a0 A science student might be tempted to rewrite this as: &#8220;Every professor talks about the scientific method, but nobody teaches it.&#8221;\u00a0 Using the scientific method and communicating scientific results are often skills students are expected to &#8220;pick up along the way.&#8221;\u00a0 These pages are intended as a partial remedy for this problem.\u00a0 They are intended primarily for students in the biological sciences, but most of the information applies equally well to other scientific disciplines (the social sciences use somewhat different writing conventions).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><u><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Using the Resources:<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The resources are divided into two main categories &#8212; the scientific method, and science writing.\u00a0 Each category is further divided into a series of topics (and sometimes subtopics).\u00a0 You can work your way through the resources from beginning to end as an informal course in &#8220;Science 101&#8221; or browse for help with specific topics using the <b>navigation bar<\/b> at the lower left of the screen (using the back and forward buttons doesn&#8217;t work well since the pages use frames).\u00a0 Main topics have boldface buttons, while subtopics do not.\u00a0 <b>Related topics are also linked<\/b>, providing a quick way to hop back and forth. Many topics have <b>examples<\/b> or <b>exercises<\/b> associated with them. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">These can be reached through the buttons at the bottom of pages. To aid those looking for specific topics, there is now a <b>Site Map<\/b> outlining all the main topics, and a hot-linked<b> Index<\/b>.
