Northern Lights Amnesia By: Daniela McGonigal-Videla

As I look up into the ink black sky,
A smattering of stars above my eyes,
Rays of moonlight white,
Like angel’s fingers grasping at the darkness
The northern lights of Aurora beginning to shine
From the emptiness of the Milky Way,
Reaching and reaching to infinity in a way that I’ll never be able to describe,
Almost inviting me to topple into their depths.
I let myself forget the world.
The lights begin: hints of fuchsia red and emerald green
Amongst the pearl white that is still hidden in the emptiness
Staying still yet still dancing on the dark canvas of the prairie skies,
And I think, can I forget the world.
And get lost in Aurora’s embrace.
Can I forget the cruelty of this world for one night?
As another girl,
Somewhere in the world, surrounded by rubble,
Like I am surrounded by the tall prairie grass,
Can look up into Aurora’s arms
And forget her pain and sorrow?
And maybe Aurora can grant us amnesia
Under her lights and swirls of nova light.
