Atrium

  • This is the first point on the 50th Anniversary Walking Tour. Look for the decal on the floor near the entrance to University Hall.
  • The Atrium serves as the spot where the original entrance to University Hall was before the expansion of the campus to the Performing Arts Centre in 1981.
  • University Hall was the first part of the University to be built, and construction was finished in 1971, with full classes taking place in the Fall semester of 1971 and Spring semester of 1972.
  • The entrance was covered with a wooden enclosure to protect those entering and exiting from the cold and inevitable Southern Alberta wind.
  • If you look at the floor outside of Urban Market you can see the original wooden dance floor where students used to gather for events.
  • Before further construction of the university the building was connected to the parking lots on the upper part of the coulee by a covered walkway known as “the Worm”.

  • This walkway was supposed to provide protection for students and faculty walking down to U Hall, but anecdotally it was known to be even colder inside it than outside on some days! The Worm was torn down in 1985 and replaced by the indoor tunnel that is still present on campus today.
