Daniel Lima, a fourth-year BASc student, majoring in Psychology and Anthropology. After studying psychology in Brazil, a curiosity about the more scientific side of the discipline brought him to the University of Lethbridge. He has taken full advantage of our liberal education foundation, taking classes in music, photography and anthropology, which is where he discovered the latter.

What makes you shine?

“People. I like people, studying people, interacting with people. I’m working at the International Centre with exchange students now; the University offers many opportunities to meet people on campus and in the community.”

Today, Daniel specializes in evolutionary anthropology, which combines anthropology with psychology. “The university is full of opportunities; so far I’ve done two terms of co-op, a number of independent studies, and I might be publishing something very soon. I’m excited about it. I’m starting my honours thesis next semester; I’m happy and taking everything I can.”

“For my Masters, we looked at the effects of chemotherapy and radiation on the brain to find out how these cancer treatments impact people later on. With our work in the lab, maybe we can someday learn how to mitigate cognitive side effects. That’s the goal: we want to see how our work can help people.” – Anna Kovalchuk (BSc ’14, MSc ’15), pictured with her supervisor Dr. Bryan Kolb (DSc ’15).

When Anna Kovalchuk (BSc ’15, MSc ’15) crossed the stage during Fall 2015 convocation, she celebrated the official completion of her Master of Science (Neuroscience). Kovalchuk began her U of L journey as an undergraduate student majoring in biochemistry, but she discovered her passion for neuroscience after taking her first course in the subject. Kovalchuk credits her supervisor Dr. Byan Kolb (DSc ’15), one of the world’s most influential neuroscientists, for building her love of research and neuroscience.
