1. Acronyms that are well known can be used on their own. Do not put periods between each letter.
Example: CBC, RCMP

2. For acronyms that aren’t as well known, write out the name and then put the acronym in brackets behind it. You can then use the acronym in all additional references to it.
Example: The University’s Organization of Residence Students (ORS) is hosting an event. The ORS holds this event twice a year to raise money for students living in residence.

3. Common U of L acronyms include:

  • CCBN (Canadian Centre for Behavioral Neuroscience)
  • CRC (Career Resources Centre)
  • FOIP (Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy)
  • ORS (Organization of Residence Students)
  • ROSS (Registrar’s Office & Student Services)
  • SU (Students’ Union)
  • ULFA (Faculty Association)
  • AUPE (Alberta Union of Provincial Employees)
  • APO (Administrative Professional Officer)

4. Common abbreviations:

  • etc.
  • i.e.
  • e.g.
  • Inc.
  • U.S. (represents United States) but use US for currency

5. Metric symbols

  • km (kilometers)
  • C (degrees Celsius)
  • t (metric ton)
  • m (metre)
  • kg (kilogram)
