She hadn’t known what real love was
Not until he smiled at her.
He offered his help without her needing to ask
He held her as she sobbed during shark week
And never laughed when she knew
She was being ridiculous.
She would have been embarrassed later
for such an outburst
but not with him.
He supported her dreams and never belittled
Never doubted what she could accomplish.
They dreamed together, hoped together, loved together.
They mourned together, cried together, healed together.
This is what love was meant to be.
It was hard to remember sometimes
That this love was unconditional
Every time she feared he would leave
That he had finally had enough of her
That she would be too much
He would give a small smile and hold her close
Making sure she knew she wasn’t alone anymore.
He was here. He was real. He was staying.
“That can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach for the stars,
Over the fence, world series kind of love”
She had found it, she was keeping it
Forever and Always
In this life and any other.
